No matter what business you’re in, I’m sure it’s been hard to ignore that networking tips are everywhere! To streamline the vast amount of information – and stop you from losing yourself on Google – I’ve put together a short list of my best networking tips.

  1. Follow-up. If you know me, you know this is my #1 networking tip. I can’t stress the importance of following up… with everyone! Don’t forget the networking event is like the knock on the door. You haven’t been invited in yet! Follow these steps to take your connections to the next level.
  2. Know Your Audience. And yourself. It’s important to recognize who you are at the event and who you are talking to. Namely, recognize the differences between introverts and extroverts and capitalize on them. Being able to read your audience will take you far and help you to readily build meaningful connections. Sometimes the guest list is available ahead of time – be even more prepared by researching fellow attendees and how a relationship could be of mutual benefit.
  3. Attend the Right Networking Events. Just because it’s a networking event doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Be discerning in the events you attend – who will be there, both in terms of individuals and industries as a whole. Depending on your networking goals, it’s often best to attend events with people NOT in your industry. You are more likely looking for referral partners or potential clients and surrounding yourself with “the competition” is not the most efficient use of your time and energy.
